Updates

  • Today, the CCC has released its 2025 report on progress in reducing emissions. Government policies to reduce emissions have improved since last year. With more action, the UK can hit its legally binding climate targets and improve energy security for households and businesses across the UK. Our top recommendation is to make electricity cheaper. This will help people feel the benefits of the transition and speed up the uptake of clean electric technologies, such as heat pumps and electric vehicles. Watch our launch video feat. our interim Chair, Professor Piers Forster, CEO Emma Pinchbeck FEI and Head of Net Zero, Dr Emily Nurse. https://lnkd.in/e9_Hk5PW

  • We’re delighted to announce the appointment of Nigel Topping, CMG as the new Chair of the Climate Change Committee.     Nigel brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served on the Committee for the last two years. He was the UN’s Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP26 and spent nearly 20 years in the private sector.      Nigel succeeds Professor Piers Forster, who has served as interim Chair for the past two years. Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, said:     “Net zero is the economic opportunity of the 21st century and Nigel’s business expertise will help us to maximise on this opportunity as we deliver our clean energy superpower mission – boosting energy security, creating good jobs, bringing down bills and tackling the climate crisis.” Read our full announcement here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/esFX3cS4

  • The Adaptation Committee has published the 2025 Progress Report on adapting to climate change. We find that the country is not prepared for climate impacts. There are clear risks across our society, including hospitals, care homes, and schools. Not only are we not seeing action, we're not seeing plans or policies to take action in the future. The Adaptation Committee is required to review the UK’s progress on adaptation every two years. The vast majority of the assessment outcomes for the 2025 report have the same low scores as in 2023. In terms of adaptation delivery, we do not find evidence to score a single outcome as ‘good’. Read the report or watch our summary video: https://lnkd.in/eQspPmcW

My guest this week on the Cleaning Up Podcast is Emma Pinchbeck FEI - CEO of the Climate Change Committee. The right wing of the Conservative party is sadly undermine investor confidence with unpatriotic attacks on a UK success story as we're weaning ourselves off expensive and dirty fossil fuels and increasing our energy security. Institutions such as the CCC are vital to ensure debates about pathways to Net Zero are informed by impartial data and analysis. So Emma's role in providing advice to Government is critical. Please tune in at 6pm GMT to hear how she's feeling about this task and why Net Zero is far from impossible.  https://lnkd.in/gkSywRxQ

  • We've had lots of interest in our Seventh Carbon Budget advice since we published two weeks ago. If you don't have time to read 394 pages of analysis, this 36 minute summary video should make sure you're up to speed. The video features our interim Chair, Professor Piers Forster, Chief Executive, Emma Pinchbeck FEI and Head of Net Zero, Dr Emily Nurse - as well as all our favourite charts and graphs to help explain our work. https://lnkd.in/eBC65FtY

    The Seventh Carbon Budget

    https://www.youtube.com/

  • The UK’s Seventh Carbon Budget level should be set at 535 MtCO2e, an 87% reduction against 1990 levels. It is in line with previous Government commitments – the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Carbon Budgets, international commitments, and the Net Zero commitment in 2050. Electrification makes up 60% of emissions reductions by 2040. This includes decarbonising the grid and replacing fossil fuelled cars and heating systems with electric alternatives. This will require initial investment but we expect to start seeing savings in the Seventh Carbon Budget period. The net cost will be about 0.2% of GDP from now to 2050. This is less than we thought when we last gave advice in 2020. 65-90% of this will be paid by the private sector. But we will need targeted public investment too. It’s important that policymakers ensure this money goes in the right place - to unlock private investment. This country has a prosperous and secure future ahead. The fossil fuel age is over – it’s time to electrify the United Kingdom. https://lnkd.in/e8ktArw6

Director of External Affairs at the Climate Change Committee

I'm recruiting again - this time for an Events and Content Senior Manager. What does that really mean? We're looking for someone to support on our big adaptation project next year - called the Fourth Climate Change Risk Assessment. The role is primarily about planning, coordinating and managing a series of workshops with the CCC's external stakeholders. It's helping us get the best from them and applying it to our work in a way that gets the most out of everyone's time. You'll get to meet some of the most interesting and well informed people in the UK working on one of the most important topics of our time - and help us turn their inputs into something amazing. What skill sets are we looking for? 💻 Experience in facilitating roundtable events and workshops. Having the ability to to plan the session, prepare the relevant materials, invite the right people and guide conversations effectively. 👥 Experience in building and developing stakeholder groups and effectively communicating with them. If you've got experience in event marketing, this job could be right up your street. 🤝 Experience in coordinating delivery across multiple teams - both inside and outside of your home organisation. It doesn't hurt for you to have an interest in climate, adaptation and/or climate risk! You'll largely be working with me and Florence Bates as we plan for the delivery of this work in 2026. • CALL FOR EVIDENCE! In partnership with the Met Office, the Climate Change Committee have launched a second round Call for Evidence to gather input for the Independent Assessment of UK Climate Risk. This will underpin the Fourth Climate Change Risk Assessment.   We are looking to use this Call for Evidence to gather input for both outputs of CCRA4-IA: 📓 The Technical Report – a review of the risks and opportunities the UK faces from climate change. The Technical Report is being delivered by a consortium led by the Met Office. In this Call for Evidence we are requesting evidence specific to each of the 45 risks and opportunities being assessed (these are set out in the webpage linked above). In particular, we are asking for quantitative evidence about the impact these risks could pose, as well as evidence on how existing and planned government and non-government adaptation will moderate these impacts. 📓 The Well-Adapted UK Report – this new output will set out the adaptation response needed to address the risks and opportunities from climate change. The Well-Adapted UK Report is being delivered by the CCC. For this Call for Evidence, we are requesting evidence about effective adaptation solutions, including evidence of their impact, the investment need and associated barriers and enablers. We are also interested in evidence which could inform targets for climate resilience.    The survey for submitting evidence can be accessed online: https://lnkd.in/e3p6eEpQ The Call for Evidence closes on the 31 March 2025.   The Call for Evidence helps to ensure we are aware of the latest and most relevant information on UK climate risk and adaptation. Thank you in advance for taking the time to contribute to this important step in our methodology, through which you are supporting the robustness of the CCRA4-IA. Contributions to the Call for Evidence will be acknowledged in both outputs.
