Phil Harding is a journalist, broadcaster and media consultant. Previously he was an award-winning producer, editor and senior executive at the BBC.
Recently he has worked as a consultant with media groups across the world - most recently in Algeria, Montenegro, Hong Kong,India and east Africa. Topics covered have included editorial leadership, public broadcasting in the digital age, making the transition from state to public broadcaster, editorial leadership, journalism in the public interest and impartiality in the modern media world.
In the UK he researched and wrote a major on the teaching and dissemination of journalistic ethics in the wake of the Leveson Inquiry.
He broadcasts for the BBC, both as a presenter and a regular contributor. He is a regular speaker and chair at international conferences.
He helped devise and regularly facilitates the BBC’s College of Journalism’s leadership course.
He is a regular speaker at international conferences. He has also lectured on creativity and crowdsourcing at the Wharton Business School in the US.
He is a Trustee of the Press Association – the leading news agency in the U.K , of the One World Media Trust and of the Commonwealth Press Union Media Trust. He is on the Council of the Media Society and on the Advisory Board of the Society of Editors.
At the BBC, Phil held a wide variety of senior editorial jobs in television and radio. He was Director of English Networks and News for the World Service, Controller of Editorial Policy (responsible for the editorial standards of all BBC output and wrote the BBC’s editorial guidelines), Chief Political Advisor, editor of news programmes at Five Live, editor of the influential Today programme and deputy editor of Panorama.
Phil has won an Emmy in the United States for his television documentary work.He has led teams that have won numerous Sony Gold awards – the most prestigious radio awards in the U.K. On Panorama

Phil Harding is a journalist, broadcaster and media consultant. Recently he has worked as a consultant with several media groups and public broadcasters on strategy, editorial policy, newsroom practices and topics such as ‘journalism in the public interest’, ‘great editorial leadership’, ‘impartiality and elections’ ‘dealing with politicians and political pressure’ , and ‘public broadcasting in the digital age’.
He has worked in a large number of countries, most recently in Algeria, Montenegro, Hong Kong and India. He also worked with the Nation Group in Kenya to produce a new set of broadcast and social media guidelines for all their tv and radio stations.
He is the author of a major report for Oxfam on international coverage and the future of U.K. public broadcasting – the Great Global Switch Off.

I held a variety of editorial positions while at the BBC including: deputy editor of the television prgrammes, Panorama and Nationwide; editor of the Today programme on Radio 4; founding editor of news programmes at Five Live, Chief Political Advisor to the BBC; Controller of Editorial Policy at the BBC and then Director of News and Englsih Networks at the BBC World Service.
