Initially working based in Foster Wheeler Reading office as the clients representative for the project management/design of their new 730MW power station at Immingham.
Transferred to site, again acting as the clients representative for the over seeing of the electrical construction and commissioning of the plant. The power station is connected to the National Grid Network at 400kV at the newly constructed GIS substation. The 400kV substation was Project Managed by NGT and built by VA Tech on behalf of ConocoPhillips.
My duties also include the preparation and submission of all NGT compliance documentation including the carrying out of the Compliance testing.
The Gas turbines are provided by GE (frame 9E) and the steam turbines by Franco Tosi.
The 6.6kVand 400V switchgear has been provided by S&I Ltd. Site control is by a Honeywell DCS system.

The Siemens project was for the re-equipping of 2 off 33/11KV sub-stations for Eastern Electricity. As Site Manager I was responsible for all aspects of the site work including civil and electrical works.
The work includes the de-commissioning and removal of redundant equipment and the installation and commissioning of new transformers and switchgear.
The work has been carried out within existing fully operational sub-stations with minimal system disruption.

Working on various projects in a Senior Project Management role for Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution. The role involves the preparation of tenders and project management for organisations such as NGC, General Electric and various RECS'. This has involved projects on substations rated at 400kV, 132kV, 33kV, 11kV and as a Senior Electrical Project Engineer for the “Moyle Project”, a 275kV HVDC link between Scotland and Northern Ireland. My responsibilities were for the specification and project management of the standby diesel generators, LVAC systems, security system, fire protection system and battery charger and inverter systems.
Site Manager on the NGC 400/132kV Creyke Beck substation refurbishment. The work involves the refurbishment of 4 bays of 400/132kV switchgear and associated protection. The project included all of the electrical and civil works. The project was carried out on time and budget and successfully handed over to NGC.
Project/Site Manager for a 33kV substation refurbishment for Manweb for their Warrington Main substation. This also included 8 remote sub-station protection up grades.

The SCM plant has under gone a plant expansion, this involved an up rating of the site electrical system. My involvement was in the replacement of 4 existing sub-stations. The equipment includes 11KV switchgear, transformers and LV motor control centres. The plant up rate includes the use of intelligent motor control centres and its tie up with a new plant DCS. The sub-station change over’s were planned to have minimum plant down time.
I was also involved in the writing and re-writing of SCM's Electrical Standards and Specifications.

Thames Power Services Ltd. are the O and M company for the1000MW combined cycle power station at Barking Reach, Essex.
The station was completed and fully operational in November 1995.
As the Senior Electrical Commissioning Engineer for Thames Power Services Ltd. my duties were to oversee and approve all electrical commissioning activities carried out by the contractors.
The station consists of 5 G.E. frame 9E gas turbines and 2 steam turbines one of 212MW and one of 175MW.
The generation voltage is 11KV, 15KV and then transformed on site to 275KV for distribution to the N.G.C. sub-station some 3Km distant
The overhead line and switchgear operates at 275KV and is owned and operated by Thames Power Services Ltd.

Electrical Engineer on Tioxide Project Team for the construction of an effluent treatment plant.
The work included the production of site standards. Liaison with Managing Contractor (Fluor Daniel Ltd.) which included, the preparation of contract estimates to a level of + or - 10%, the production/approval of technical specifications for tender, the evaluation of tenders and the final choice of vendors for electrical equipment, the choice of the main electrical and instrument contractor and approval of all design and construction matters.
The work included the installation of two EGT 3.8MW gas turbines in a C.H.P. scheme.
I instigated the 11KV distribution system on the existing Tioxide plant and instigated design changes to accommodate the two gas turbines operating in parallel with the local Yorkshire Electricity supply. This included detailed discussion with Y.E. and O.F.F.E.R. (The Electricity Supply Industry Regulator).
The effluent treatment plant was taken through from design to final commissioning and handover to Grimsby Works.
The handover included the training of Grimsby Works Maintenance staff.

Contracted to Birds Eye Walls, Grimsby. Carried out design of various control panels for food processing line. Designed PLC controlled sequence systems using Square D Symax unit.

I designed the electrical system for a paint factory at Flixborough for Jotun Ltd. of Norway and carried out all on site commissioning.

Since the commissioning of the plant in January 1987 I remained on site as the Electrical Engineer responsible for plant maintenance, major plant modifications, all electrical design work carried out on site, supervision of contract maintenance staff and technical back up for the plants own operating staff.
The electrical equipment on site included 11KV and 415V switchgear, Laurence Scott and Stromberg variable speed a.c. drives, the largest being 384KW. The process is controlled by 2 Texas 565 PLC’s.

Gas turbine driven compressors, 8 Ruston TA 1750's and numerous portable diesel generating sets. My duties also included the production of maintenance, operation and switching procedures and the operation of a permit control system.

The project is a 30,000 barrel a day refinery and gas turbine power station on the East Coast of Malaysia, owned by Petronas and built by the Japanese Company J.G.C.
My duties were as the on site electrical consultant for the entire project, overseeing all construction matters and design modifications. I was directly involved in the latter stages of construction and the commissioning of the plant.
The power station has 7 Konsberg K.G. 5 gas turbines each of 3.2KVA capacity. Two Ruston TA 2500 gas turbines are used to drive gas compressors.
The power station was designed to supply other petro-chemical related industries.
Power is generated and distributed at 11KV, the main on site sub-station is fed at 11KV and two smaller ones at 3.3KV. The majority of electrical equipment is manufactured by Fuji.
All the 11KV and 3.3KV switchgear is of a vacuum type. The largest motors on site are 1.75MW, 11KV direct on line pump drives. U.P.S. systems are employed for critical requirements such as the computer used in monitoring oil movements.

The company had the O and M contract for the power generation and distribution system for the world's largest construction site.
The distribution system includes 34.5KV and 13.8KV overhead lines and underground cable. A 115KV oil filled cable system has been installed and commissioned. Generation is by 5 G.E. frame 5 and 8 G.E. (Hitachi) frame 7 gas turbines with a total output of 600MW.
My primary function was to provide the technical analysis of the electrical system being operated and provide technical back up to the maintenance staff.

Nichemtex was a textile company and is involved in the production of synthetic textiles and the spinning and weaving of finished materials, employing about 2500 people.
My responsibilities were for the start up and maintenance of a newly commissioned filament plant and its own 6MW power station, 4 x 1.5 11KV diesel driven alternators, and the site11KV distribution system.
I had an all-Nigerian staff of about 30.
The equipment included Emerson Invertors, Siemens thyristor controlled d.c. motor drives and Freon cooled 1MW motors on compressor drives.

January 1975 – September 1978 (3 years 9 months) Immingham, South Humberside.
The Immingham Bulk Terminal handled iron ore, coal and coke about 12 million tons a year. I was responsible for all electrical work carried out on a shift basis. Reporting to me were up to 20 electricians depending upon the shift being worked. The bulk handling plant used high-speed conveyor systems, 4000 tons per hour, high capacity stacking and reclaiming machines, ship unloading equipment, bunkering facilities and weighing equipment. The electrical system has two distribution voltages 11KV and 3.3KV. Thyristor controlled d.c. drives are used on the ship unloading machines and a Ward Leonard control system on the reclaiming machines.

Sub-Contract work that included commissioning for Hamworthy Engineering on boiler control systems at various power stations throughout Britain, the largest being 500MW sets at Pembroke. Also for Babcock Moxey Ltd. on their Bucket Wheel bulk handling machines used by the British Steel Corporation.
I acted as site Electrical Engineer for both these companies.
