My research explores the implications of media change for learning, cognition and education. Early work investigated the use of intelligent tutoring systems, multiplayer role playing games and learning design tools to support teaching and learning in the humanities classroom. Later work employed ethnographic methods to explore students' informal use of new media in their study rooms. The aim is to provide a grounded insight in the future of (self) education. This work builds upon and contributes to the tradition of sociocultural and activity theory.
My first book, 'The Decentring of the Traditional University: the future of (self) education in virtually figured worlds', reworks material from my thesis to illustrate and conceptualise how learners are transforming the quasi-virtual contexts of their own learning and personal development.
