Nokia sponsorship of London free WiFi
- September 2011 to December 2011
Team Members: Daniel Gray, Scott AdamsNokia and Spectrum Interactive, the UK’s leading independent provider of Wi-Fi services, announced the first large scale trial of free Wi-Fi access in the busiest streets across London. This is the first ever public Wi-Fi scheme in the UK that’s specifically aiming to make it easier for people on the move to access online services for free.
Internet access is initially available for a trial period at 26 street hotspots from November 1st until the end of 2011 and will test how consumers interact with the free Wi-Fi service. Following a successful trial, plans are in place for a large-scale rollout across London from early 2012.
The two-month trial is intended to assess both the demand for free Wi-Fi access and the browsing behaviour of consumers using the service across the capital. The findings will be used to determine the best locations for future hotspots and the necessary bandwidth to meet robust consumer demand.
“Nokia believes you can upgrade every day moments to make them amazing. Providing free Wi-Fi access to London commuters and visitors does just that. On-the-go internet access has become an indispensible part of modern life,” said John Nichols, Head of Marketing at Nokia. “From tourists finding their way around the capital, to commuters updating Facebook or browsing on the move, we all depend on mobile to share our everyday experiences and enhance our lives. Nokia is pleased to sponsor this pilot which we hope will connect people even more easily than ever before.”

Team Members: Daniel GraySpectrum Interactive completed the rollout of WiFi services across Moto Hospitality Ltd (Moto), the UK’s largest provider of motorway service areas. The service provides Moto's customers with free WiFi across the entire UK estate of 60 sites. The network configuration includes a number of bespoke features and a public web filter.
Ashleigh Lewis, Commercial Director for Moto commented “We are always looking for ways to enhance the customer experience and differentiate the Moto offer, and providing free WiFi enables us to do just that. Spectrum has worked with Moto for over 14 years and so we had complete confidence that the team would deliver. Spectrum's flexible approach, together with a cost-effective solution was a winning combination.”
Guy Latchem, IT Director for Moto added, "The implementation was very smooth, with excellent communication and co-ordination, which definitely met our expectations.”
Daniel Gray, Head of Travel Division for Spectrum said "This is an important contract for Spectrum, as it is first to bring Spectrum's WiFi service to the UK motorway services sector. Spectrum wins big in retail with 380 more restaurants for Wi-Fi
- January 2012 to Present
Team Members: Daniel GrayFollowing the recent Premier Inn Wi-Fi contract win, Spectrum Interactive, the UK’s largest independent provider of Wi-Fi and related services, announced that its Wi-Fi network will also roll-out to Whitbread’s four restaurant brands - Beefeater, Table Table, Brewers Fayre and Taybarns.
This agreement represents 380 Whitbread-owned restaurants across the UK and will enable the brands to offer customers totally free Wi-Fi access.
The Spectrum solution includes data capture functionality that will help provide Beefeater, Table Table, Brewers Fayre and Taybarns with enhanced customer insight which can be used to support tailored marketing campaigns.
“Spectrum’s relationship with Whitbread made it the obvious choice for Wi-Fi across our busy restaurant brands. For some years we have worked closely with the Spectrum team, most recently for the roll-out of a digital signage solution to around 100 Brewers Fayre and Beefeater locations,” commented Siobhan Fagan, head of customer and business solutions at Whitbread.
“In the same way that consumers have come to take Wi-Fi access for granted in hotels, increasingly they are now expecting it in restaurants and other retail establishments,” said Simon Alberga, executive chairman, Spectrum Interactive. “Beefeater, Table Table, Brewers Fayre and Taybarns are among the savviest brands that recognise the value in providing Wi-Fi for customers. Not only does its availability help attract and retain business, but it can also provide customer intelligence invaluable to the business,” he concluded.

Spectrum awarded exclusive Wi-Fi contract for Premier Inn estate
- January 2012 to Present
Team Members: Daniel GrayLong-term contract to see Spectrum provide guest Wi-Fi service to Whitbread’s 600-strong hotel chain across the UK.
Spectrum Interactive, the UK’s largest independent provider of Wi-Fi and related services, has announced that it has been awarded the contract to supply guest Wi-Fi provision to all 600 Premier Inn hotels in the UK.
Spectrum is a preferred technology partner to Whitbread, having provided Wi-Fi services to approximately half of the Premier Inn hotel estate since 2006. This new contract will see Spectrum serve the entire Premier Inn estate with a bespoke, hybrid Wi-Fi solution which offers a combination of restricted free and unlimited chargeable access. The roll-out will complete by the end of January 2012. In addition, Spectrum will continue to install and operate Wi-Fi at all new Premier Inn sites across the UK as they open.
“Flexibility, reliability and resilience were major factors in deciding on an exclusive Wi-Fi provider for the entire Premier Inn estate,” explained Siobhan Fagan, head of customer and business solutions at Whitbread. “Premier Inn has enjoyed significant growth over the last two years and has further aggressive expansion plans, so it was vital for us to work with Spectrum as a leading Wi-Fi specialist offering a national, managed service capable of keeping pace with the needs of our evolving business,” she added.
“We are very proud to have been a trusted partner of Whitbread’s over the last few years. This contract win strengthens our already close relationship and builds on our recent digital signage wins at Brewers Fayre and Beefeater,” commented Simon Alberga, executive chairman, Spectrum Interactive. “To now be selected as Whitbread’s exclusive Wi-Fi partner for its entire hotel estate is a vote of confidence in our ability to service the largest hotel estate in the UK and brings the total number of UK hotel rooms and managed accommodation units served by Spectrum Wi-Fi to over 85,000,” he concluded.

Travelodge National Hotel Wi-Fi Rollout Completed Two Months Ahead of Schedule
- August 2007 to January 2008
The new network was completed two months ahead of schedule by Spectrum Interactive, a Colubris Premier partner, and provides wireless high speed internet connectivity for Travelodge guests in over 20,000 rooms. The network is operated as a managed service by Spectrum Interactive.
Travelodge required a Wi-Fi solution that could be rapidly deployed to its existing hotels and was scalable to meet the demands of the company’s growth. The national rollout was completed at the rate of 44 hotel installations a month, with Travelodge’s entire UK hotel portfolio provided with Wi-Fi guest access by the end of January 2008, well before the March 2008 project deadline.
Alex Thompson, IT Director at Travelodge said; “Over 6.5 million customers use Travelodge every year and we want to ensure that we offer everything they need for a comfortable stay. Our customers are Internet savvy - in fact, 87% of them book their rooms via our website - so installing WIFI throughout our estate clearly supports their interests. The solution provided by Colubris and Spectrum Interactive gives us a secure stand-alone wireless network and we are pleased that the project has been completed ahead of schedule.”
Over 2,500 Colubris MultiService Access Points, have been deployed in tandem with a 5000 Series MultiService Controller at each Travelodge hotel across the country. Colubris networking solutions are 802.11a/b/g/n compliant, which allows Travelodge to adopt the new 802.11n standard as they are ready without having to upgrade their controllers or infrastructure.
Mark Lewarne, chief executive at Spectrum Interactive said; “The Colubris intelligent networking solution met all of Travelodge’s requirements. The solution was key in enabling Spectrum Interactive to complete Wi-Fi deployments in all 330 hotels two months ahead of the expected delivery date. Equally important is the scalability and performance as the company plans to expand to 500 hotels by 2012.”
