Mazy Burns’s Summary

I am a Usability and User Centred Design specialist. After working as a web designer for 5 years I specialised in User Centred Design during my MA in Interactive Media, and I’ve gone on to work as a Usability consultant on a wide variety of challenging projects.

My experience enables me to identify the best ways to integrate the needs of the user into any digital development project. I take a pragmatic approach, focussing on rapid usability testing and user research, the findings of which can usually be quickly implemented into the user interface development. I’ve seen many excellent results where user task times and click through conversions have greatly improved as a result of implementing my recommendations.

My background in web design also means I am able to create visual mock ups and functional prototypes to clearly illustrate and support the usability and interaction design recommendations which result from my research.

I’ve a great deal of client-facing experience and delivered countless debriefs where I’ve been able to clearly communicate the findings of user research to a wide audience including technical and non-technical stakeholders. I’ve acted as an advocate of Usability in several of my consultancy positions, most notable IPC Media, where I’ve delivered presentations on the value of usability to the CEO, MDs, Publishers, Editors, Designers, Developers and many other stakeholders.

My work as a lecturer in User Experience, User Centred design and Usability means I have had a unique opportunity to reflect on the work I do and teach the theory and methodologies to students from a wide variety of professional backgrounds and different cultures. I’m currently writing a series of new lectures for a new ‘Sustainable Futures’ unit on the LCC Interactive MA, where I am exploring the possibilities for Interactive Media to support environmental sustainability, and I think there are a great deal of positive opportunities in this area.
