Louise O'Callaghan’s Experience

  • Pupil

    Hardwicke Building

    (Law Practice industry)

    October 2008Present (1 year 4 months)

A pupillage is the barrister's equivalent of the training contract that a solicitor undertakes. It is similar to an apprenticeship where students build on what they have learnt during the Bar Vocational Course by combining it with practical work experience in a set of barristers' chambers.

A pupillage is the final stage of training to be a barrister and usually lasts one year being made up of two six-month periods (known as "sixes"). The first of these is the non-practising six during which pupils shadow their pupilmaster and the second will be a practising six when pupils can undertake to supply legal services and exercise rights of audience.

I am currently at a civil set of chambers (Hardwicke Building) and i am in my second six. My key areas of interest are intellectual property and commercial law.

  • Planning and Performance

    Shell

(Public Company; RDSA; Oil & Energy industry)

    June 2006July 2008 (2 years 2 months)

The Retail Contracting and Procurement department is responsible for the contracts that make up the Retail spend. Areas covered by the CP Retail include Brand and Communications, Payment and Loyalty, Design and Construction, Site Maintenance, Retail Site Equipment and Automation, Environmental Services and Convenience Retail. My role was global and across each of these sub-lines of business. My responsibilities included financial tracking of value improvements made to contracts, tenders, negotiations, conferences, contract drafting, supplier management and dispute resolution. Recent projects included the drafting of new global, regional and national standard terms and conditions and a competitive tender for a new retail site database. I was also personally responsible for the review and risk analysis of over 300 software contracts. My role meant I was dealing with a large amount of numerical values on a regular basis and therefore analytical skills were paramount.

  • External Relations and Policy Advisor

    Shell

(Public Company; RDSA; Oil & Energy industry)

    20042004 (less than a year)

Projects included the management of the development of software for a stakeholder management system and an online tool which mapped world issues (maps were subsequently published in the Financial Times).

Both are applications which are still used within the company and one of which has been licensed extensively for use by a number of major blue chip companies.

Other notable projects included the legal ramifications of SOX Compliance and other environmental policy initiatives.
