I am the Head of Global Intake, the intelligence and risk mitigation service of AKE. Global Intake provides organisations with the information and advice they need to work safely in challenging environments around the world. The analysis and forecasting contained on the site can help an organisation manage its risk exposure and maximise operations, without compromising safety, integrity or reputation.
It can give companies a competitive edge and greater international reach by allowing them to operate in emerging markets with fewer competitors. It can help news networks and NGOs cover a story or deliver relief even in some of the more hazardous parts of the world.
The real-time information contained on the site is gathered from a variety of reliable sources, including seasoned journalists, trusted local contacts, senior academics and AKE’s former Special Forces personnel operational around the world.
In the past I have worked in the Middle East and South Asia, in environments ranging from urban Iraq to the Sri Lankan jungle. My previous experience includes journalism and conservation but with AKE I have worked for over seven years with international news networks, NGOs, oil and gas companies and the insurance market in Lloyd’s of London. For five years I was a volunteer journalist for the Am Muileach newspaper, which serves the Isle of Mull (where I am from). The Am Muileach was Scotland's only non-subsidised, non-profit community newspaper during my time with the paper. I produced monthly articles on local and Scottish political affairs. When the last editor retired from her position we could find no suitable replacement. As such, the committee decided to end the paper, setting aside funds for its re-establishment in the future when a new suitable editor can be found. Maybe when I retire from security and risk analysis and return to the Hebrides I will take up the position myself.
