Analysis & Discussion of Extreme Dissonance
- University of Huddersfield
- May 10, 2008
Authors: Tom DavenportResearch into dissonance was completed. Three types of unpleasant sounds (generated noise, humans screaming, and scraping sounds) were recorded. Test subjects rated these from pleasant to unpleasant. The scraping sounds were considered the most unpleasant, followed by a baby crying. The sounds were divided into separate frequency bands to confirm the ranges that people find most unpleasant. Overwhelmingly, the upper mid to high ranges were found to be the most unpleasant. Frequency content of the scratching (or ‘gride’ sounds) was found to be similar to portions of sound from a baby crying.
