Staff Writer for IT PRO Magazine, the only purely IT business news and features website at Dennis Publishing. I was responsible for the Security, networking, retail and financial services beats.
For security especially, I had to constantly write good quality content and keep up to date with the latest trends. Formed working relationships with security vendors and made my name known out there.
Wrote four or five news stories every day which ranged from short pieces picked up from the national press to longer unique analysis pieces which involve me talking to experts in the field or the relevant IT vendors.
Learned the required CMS and HTML skills to post up stories and source my own pictures. I had some editing responsibilities when short staffed or editing Reuters stories to use on the website.
I know how to write successfully on the web thanks to my experience on the job and various training courses, as well as the constant writing of copy on a busy news desk.
Constantly analysed and measure news web traffic thanks to my expertise with Hitbox and Google Analytics. Learned about how SEO is a very important part of traffic gathering in internet publishing.
Experience with talking to high-level IT bosses, easy in making contacts and can source news from a range of sources, including RSS and Twitter.
Travelled to different parts of the world to attend conferences and events held by companies and organisations such such as IBM, Cisco, F-Secure and ENISA. Included US, Greece, Germany, Finland, Spain and South Africa.

Accredited by the Periodicals Training Council (PTC), this included the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Periodical (Print) Journalism. The course included the production of an award winning website closely modelled on the BBC’s called Westminster News Online. I was made the editor of the site. I was responsible for the overall running of WNOL and related online areas such as video, where we worked closely with broadcast journalists. For the final award of the diploma we created a magazine called ‘Six Degrees’ which were entered into the PTC student publishing awards, and which I was also made editor. We were responsible for the whole process, from the creation of editorial content to its layout. The magazine was based around social networking and user generated content. During the course I learned vital journalism skills for the workplace. These included the news agenda, law, online journalism, news, feature writing and specialist journalism (science and technology).
